Radon Inspection For Daycare Centers
Daycare Center Radon Inspection
“Help Protect the Children at Your Daycare – Test Regularly for Radon”
New legislation in Illinois requires daycare centers to be tested for elevated levels of the colorless, odorless, & tasteless natural gas. We all agree this is a step in the right direction as parents have been asking for years for stricter testing, transparency & consistency from daycare centers and the exposure their children are facing to radon. Our team at Callaway & Associates take this new responsibility and provide professional radon inspection for daycare centers in & around the following communities: Champaign, Urbana, Mattoon, Decatur, Charleston, Danville & the greater Champaign county area.
Radon Inspection Specifically Designed for Daycare Centers
While the inspection & testing process for determining density of radon may not change too much from building to building, we have designed a radon inspection & testing process specifically fit to meet the needs of daycare centers in East-Central Illinois and the greater Champaign County area. Daycare center radon inspections in Illinois must be performed by a licensed radon professional like Callaway & Associates, take-home tests are not an acceptable forms of testing for a non-residential daycare center. These tests must be performed a minimum of once every three years, but we would recommend performing a test annually to ensure you minimize the risk of having your children exposed to elevated radon levels.
Step 1: Floor Plan & Site Visit
Our expert daycare radon inspector in East-Central Illinois will come and take an initial in-person visit. This helps us scout the building and the amount and type of equipment needed to do a proper test. We will also be able to provide a ballpark estimate of the time required to complete testing & have the test results shortly after this point. It’s important we take our time with this initial inspection step, we want to make sure we have the right amount of equipment so you can be confident in the test results!
Step 2: Setup & Testing
Depending on the needs of the space and time constraints, the radon testing process for daycare centers in East-Central Illinois can take anywhere from 48 hours to one year in length. This testing process is known as “passive testing”, meaning you and the children at your daycare center are able to go about your days as normal – you will hardly notice that the radon equipment is even there!
Step 3: Analyze & Deliver Results
After testing is completed, it typically only takes about a week to have the test results analyzed & sent to you! We will provide full descriptions and our analysis with the results so you fully understand the current state of radon in your daycare center. We will provide you with certificate proof that your daycare center has been recently tested for elevated radon levels by a licensed professional in Illinois. We will also provide tangible next steps with a strategy for you to take if elevated levels of radon are found anywhere in your daycare center.
What to Do if Elevated Levels of Radon Are Found in Your Daycare Center?
The Surgeon General’s office has declared that children are found to be more susceptible to elevated levels of radon, and the carcinogen effects it may have later in life. This makes it very important to test frequently for elevated radon levels to ensure the children at your daycare center in Illinois are not over-exposed to the harmful natural gas.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) has determined that any levels of radon below 4.0 pCi/L is considered acceptable for a person to be exposed to. We know that children are more sensitive to radiation from radon gas and feel as though the levels in daycare centers shouldn’t come anywhere near as high as these “acceptable” levels. We can help provide a plan of action to reduce your radon density levels throughout your East-Central Illinois daycare center.
Interestingly enough, the newer legislation passed by Illinois back in 2013 doesn’t require daycare centers that are found to have elevated levels of radon put a plan of action in place to reduce radon levels. We would certainly recommend that if your non-residential daycare center is found to have elevated radon levels above or near 4.0 pCi/L, that you have a licensed radon mitigation professional install a radon mitigation system for the long-term health of both you and the children at your daycare center.
Callaway & Associates does not install radon mitigation systems or provide radon mitigation service; we feel as though it would be a conflict of interest to test, recommend further action be taken, and provide the mitigation services required. Instead, we will recommend a licensed radon mitigation professional in East-Central Illinois that can provide these services at the same high standard of quality Callaway & Associates adheres to.
Residential Daycare Center Testing Requirements
Although they still must be tested at least once every three years and display proof of inspection, residential or in-home daycare centers have slightly different requirements according to the state of Illinois laws. Instead of having a licensed radon inspection professional like Callaway & Associates perform the tests, they are able to perform the testing with a take-home radon testing kit and post the results.
We can help with this as well! We will provide you with the same high-quality professional radon testing & inspection equipment that we use in our inspections for your home! You will have comprehensive instructions that clearly show how to administer and read the results of your radon testing.
