Daycare Radon Testing Legislation

On January 1, 2013, the daycare legislation went into effect, requiring daycare centers in Illinois, including those in Charleston IL, to undergo daycare radon inspections at least once every three years. This law applies to non-residential daycare facilities as well as home daycares. If the daycare you run is not a residential home, then you must hire a licensed measurement professional such as Callaway and Associates to test your facility. Home daycares may also employ a licensed professional to test their homes for radon. If the daycare is licensed under the Illinois School Code, a school district employee may complete an online training course to pass an examination by IEMA as an alternative to hiring a licensed measurement professional.

Why Test for RadonWhy Test for Radon?

Radon is a serious problem that should be addressed, as it poses a significant threat to the community. High probabilities of radon problems occurring in your home are the main reason for home radon testing. However, if radon in homes can reach alarming levels, then the possibilities of dangerous levels of radon occurring in other buildings can also be high. More importantly, structures occupied daily by those who are most vulnerable to radon risks such as school children, including schools, classrooms, playgrounds, and daycare centers, must be tested for harmful amounts of radon. To do this, professionals such as Callaway and Associates, Inc. do their job to accurately test schools for the dangerous substance.

Radon can exist in any structure or residence, but radon in daycares and schools can be a real problem for our youth. We teach our children about the dangers of cigarette smoking as the primary cause of lung cancer, but we should also check for harmful levels of radon, a radioactive substance that is the second leading cause of lung cancer. In addition, the longer we are exposed to radon gas, the greater our risk for the disease. Thus, when children stay in school all day, they could be at great risk when a school or daycare center has a radon problem. As it is estimated that more than 70,000 U.S. classrooms exhibit elevated levels of radon gas, it is time for to take the problem seriously and allow for proper radon testing in schools and daycares.

The amount of radon gas in the air is measured in picocuries per liter of air or pCi/L. In some measurements, results are expressed as Working Levels (WL), which represent radon decay products. The EPA recommends that schools take action to reduce the level of radon when amounts are 4 pCi/L (or 0.02 WL) or higher. According to an EPA study, about 19.3% or one in five schools have at least one classroom with radon level above 4.0 pCi/L. Among these schools, several were found to have levels exceeding 20 pCi/L, whereas other had levels over 100 pCi/L. This is a very high level that can significantly increase the health risks by more than tenfold. Therefore, professional testing should be performed to detect harmful levels of radon in schools.
